It’s Not a Chaneque, It’s Just Car Trouble: 5 Real Issues Drivers Ignore (But Shouldn’t)

At Mike & Nick’s, we love a good story. Folklore like the Chaneque, a mischievous creature from Mexican legend known for hiding your stuff, confusing your memory, or making you forget where you parked, makes for fun shop talk.

But here’s the thing: when it comes to your car, it’s almost never magic.

Most of the “weird” issues customers experience, mysterious noises, lights turning on and off, a strange pull in one direction, are signs of simple maintenance being missed.

So today, let’s talk truth. Here are five of the most common issues we see at the shop that drivers tend to ignore, and what you can do to avoid falling into a repair rabbit hole (or blaming a Chaneque for your car drama).

Low Tire Pressure & Worn Treads

“My car feels weird, like it’s fighting me.”

Sounds like… neglected tires.

Tires are the most underappreciated part of your car until something goes wrong. Low pressure, uneven wear, or dry rot can cause your car to pull, shake, or ride rough and increase your risk of a blowout.

We can’t tell you how many times customers pull in thinking their alignment is off when it’s just a tire issue. The worst part? Uneven wear reduces tire life and kills your gas mileage.

Common signs:

  • Your car pulls to one side.

  • The steering wheel shakes at high speeds.

  • The outer or inner tread is worn more than the center.

  • Your TPMS light keeps coming on.

How to prevent it:

  • Check pressure monthly, even more often when it’s hot or cold.

  • Rotate your tires every 5,000–6,000 miles.

  • Get your alignment checked if you hit potholes or curbs often.

  • Ask us for a free visual tread check, we’ll even show you what to look for.

 Worn Brake Pads & Rotors

“It squeaks… but only when I stop kinda hard.”

That’s your car saying “Please fix my brakes.”

Brake systems don’t fail overnight. They start with small symptoms: squeaking, longer stopping distance, or a slight vibration. The longer you ignore it, the more damage happens, especially to rotors, which are more expensive to replace.

We’ve had cars come in where the pads were so worn, the metal was grinding straight into the rotor. That’s not just dangerous, it’s expensive.

Common signs:

  • Squealing or screeching when you stop.

  • Grinding (metal-on-metal) sounds.

  • Vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal.

  • Brake warning light comes on.

  • Your car takes longer to stop than it used to.

How to prevent it:

  • Have your brakes checked every 10,000 miles or once a year.

  • Listen for any new noises, brakes shouldn’t make sound.

  • If your pedal feels different (softer or spongier), stop by immediately.

  • We do quick, honest brake inspections,no upsells, just facts.

Check Engine Light = Check It Now

“It’s probably just the gas cap.”

It might be… or it might be a deeper issue you’re ignoring.

Your Check Engine light isn’t there for fun,it’s an early warning system. Even if your car feels fine, a glowing CEL (Check Engine Light) can mean something serious brewing underneath. It could be a misfire, a failed O2 sensor, or a failing catalytic converter ($$$). And no, it doesn’t always turn off on its own.

Common signs:

  • Yellow or flashing engine light on your dash.

  • Rough idling or sluggish acceleration.

  • Decreased fuel economy.

  • Engine running hot or “off.”

How to prevent it:

  • Don’t ignore the light, get it scanned ASAP.

  • We offer free diagnostic code reads and explain them in plain English.

  • If it’s just a gas cap? Great. If not, you’ll be glad you caught it early.

  • Some small fixes today can save thousands down the line.

Overdue Oil Changes

“I’m only a little past due, it still drives fine.”

Until it doesn’t. Oil is your engine’s lifeline.

Skipping oil changes is like not drinking water, it works for a while, then everything starts to fail. Over time, dirty oil loses its ability to cool and lubricate the engine, leading to friction, overheating, sludge buildup, and eventually, engine failure.

We’ve had cars towed in with engines completely seized… just from ignoring an oil light.

Common signs:

  • Oil light or check engine light comes on.

  • The engine sounds louder or “tickier.”

  • Oil is black and gritty when checked.

  • You’ve gone over 5,000 miles since your last change.

How to prevent it:

  • Stick to your oil change schedule (usually every 3,000–5,000 miles depending on your car and oil type).

  • Use high-quality oil and filters (we do both).

  • Let us give your car a free fluid health check with every oil change.

  • We even reset all your sensors and top off fluids, so no surprise lights later.

Weird Noises & Vibrations

“It only makes that noise when it’s cold… or raining… or turning left.”

We hear this a lot. Literally.

Clunks, whines, buzzes, rattles, those are your car’s early warning system. It could be a loose heat shield, a worn engine mount, a bad belt, or suspension parts going bad.

You’d be shocked how often people turn up their radio to avoid the sound. That’s not car care, that’s denial.

Common signs:

  • Knocking or clunking over bumps.

  • High-pitched whining or squealing.

  • Vibrations that come and go with speed or acceleration.

  • New or unusual noises at startup, idle, or while turning.

How to prevent it:

  • Trust your instincts ,if it sounds weird, it is weird.

  • Catching small noises early often means a simple, affordable fix.

  • We’ll ride with you, recreate the issue, and explain exactly what’s happening.

Bonus: We always do a bolt and bushing check during full inspections.
